MIS Wireless Broadband FAQ

What exactly is wireless? What frequencies does it use?

MIS is a pioneer in the field of broadband wireless wide area networking, providing service for Maine customers since 1997. We have worked closely with the manufacturer of the equipment we utilize to create the fastest, most stable and secure network of its type available. MIS utilizes 900MHz, 2.4GHz, and 5.xGHz frequency bands to provide services to meet the unique demands of our customers and is always working hard to stay on the leading edge of this technology.

Will this allow me to use my laptop anywhere on my property?

No, this is a point-to-point wireless system between a fixed radio unit at your location and one of our many access points. "Wi-Fi" is a local area network system that would allow you to have roaming connectivity in your home or office. We offer such a service separately and we work closely with several companies that also offer this service. Please contact us for further details.

I have a 900MHz wireless phone and/or a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi router in my home, will these interfere with the service?

MIS Wireless systems utilize frequency hopping and spread spectrum technology which minimize interference and cross-talk. However, careful placement of other radio frequency transmitting equipment is needed. Please contact us for more information on this subject.

You mentioned Line of Sight, what does that mean?

2.4GHz and 5.xGHz wireless services require direct line of sight. Clear line of sight is defined as a straight path between your location and our access point with no obstruction. 900MHz frequencies are able to penetrate foliage, but not earth and other solid obstructions and there is a distance limit of under two miles.

How do I know if I can get service?

At your request we will send one of our wireless technicians to your location to conduct a site survey. The on-site survey performed by our certified technicians will verify whether or not you can receive the signal from one of our access points. There is no charge for checking service availability, however there are costs involved for traveling to islands; please contact us if this will be needed.

Do you offer seasonal service?

We currently offer a seasonal plan for our customers. It requires a minimum of five months of service at the regular rate, and allows up to seven months off-season billing at $20 per month. The off season rate includes email access via our website but does not provide broadband access. Please contact us for more details on this plan.
